Community Garden Project

Wednesday, 23 November, 2011

We are delighted to launch the Abbey Community Garden Programme, a new initiative to transform neglected green areas into attractive and useful gardens.

This project was prompted by a decision of Merton’s minority Labour administration to stop the maintenance of the majority of the Borough’s parks and green spaces. Many areas are now going to get little more than an annual grass cutting.

Conservative Councillors Diane Neil Mills and Henry Nelless have spoken to environmental group Sustainable Merton about how we can ensure that these spaces are not left to go to ruin. The two areas that we will focus on first are Trafalgar Gardens on Norman Road and the small cut through off Grove Road.

We hope local residents will be keen to help. Together we can create areas to be proud of and which, by next summer, will be pleasant places that everyone can enjoy. Ideas under consideration include the planting of a small orchard or a wild flower garden.
