Back Boris for a Greater London

Thank you - With your help and support, we had a fantastic result in Merton and Wandsworth. Over 75,000 votes cast for our Party and a majority of over 26,000!

We also played a large part in Boris Johnson's success in becoming Mayor. None of this would have been possible without your help. The amount of support has been humbling, day after day and through all kinds of weather, so many people came out to campaign.

I am sure that this is the start of a great period for the Conservatives, for London and the whole country - For the exact results click here..

Richard Tracey

Conservative London Assembly Member for Merton & Wandsworth

Richard Tracey - Conservative Candidate for London AssemblyRichard is a local resident. He and his wife Kathy live in central Wandsworth where they have raised 4 children, one of whom runs a business in Wimbledon. In his spare time, Richard takes an active interest in rowing and rugby football, and is a former Current Affairs broadcaster with the BBC. In 2006, he became Sport England Chair for South London. In May 2008 Richard was elected as London Assembly Member for Merton and Wandsworth.

Richard's Experience
Richard was MP for Surbiton for 14 years, which has given him a wealth of experience to call upon. His experience also includes a role as an Environment Minister in the Thatcher Government and as a senior member of the Public Accounts Committee in the House of Commons. He is also a Justice of the Peace.

Richard's Objectives for Merton and Wandsworth
Richard says, "I am looking forward to the prospect of working within the Greater London Assembly from 2008. I believe the Mayor has to be held to account more strongly. Mayoral spending and City Hall bureaucracy were becoming seriously excessive, while more efficient management needs to be exerted over London transport services and overall policing in the capital. I was one of the team of Ministers involved in the abolition of the former GLC monster and I feared that the previous Mayor had been trying to rebuild his old empire. It had to be stopped."

  • For a fairer deal for local commuters
In Merton, he has visited the new exciting Eastfields station site in Mitcham and campaigned hard with local councillors to solve annoying traffic and bus stop problems in West Barnes.

Recently, Richard has launched a campaign for a new bus service running from Tooting Bec to Parsons Green. Please take time to sign the petition.

Richard has also been campaigning on behalf of local London Underground users who have suffered disruption as a result of poor planning by the Mayor and TfL. Read a letter to the Mayor on behalf of local residents.

On another occasion, Richard recently went to meet Mike Brown, Chief Operating Officer of London Underground, alongside Stephen Hammond MP, to discuss the issues faced by Merton & Wandsworth commuters.

Richard has just visited Tubelines, pursing progress on the Northern Line improvements.

  • For better value for money - City Hall is spending too much, wasting too much and taxing too much

Helicopter noise is proving to be a nuisance to residents, which is why Richard met with heliport managers and flight controllers at Battersea heliport recently.
